What seems good to one person seems evil to another, and what
seems evil to one person is good to another.
Everyone, even the most evil villain, thinks they are acting for good.
And if the Vatican uses magic to enforce its religion and
beliefs, it is because they believe that humans are full of sin
and must be purified.
And yes, from your perspective, it's black magic that the Vatican uses
to exert its influence, but for them, it's the oldest game in the world.
Exercising power and wanting to improve the world in their own image...
or at least continuing to make everyone believe that Adam and Eve
screwed up.
The Vatican also possesses a portal that leads to another world. They
walk through this portal in and out—at least their true leaders do. The
pope you see in public is just the figurehead for the people. The real
pope operates behind the scenes.
This other world that the Vatican can cross over into is just as physical
as ours and a world where magic still works. In that world, you'd think
